All piano compositions starting with those originally included on Album 3 (Total Eclipse) have been pulled aside into the distinct piano collection listed here. Piano compositions from albums 1 and 2 are still listed under those original albums. I consider Daydreaming to be a period-division of my piano pieces, all pieces including and after it being of a different "period" than those preceding it (that is why I left the earlier piano pieces grouped with the first two albums). It is interesting to note that I have never had a synesthetic experience with piano music. Go figure.

Much like Sinusoidal, this piece took me a very long time to finish. I had it more or less figured out around January 2009. It then languished, undergoing minor refinements (all for the better I believe) until I finally wrote it down in July 2011. I finally made the initial recording at the end of 2018, but didn't clean up and finalize the recording in the end of 2019, ultimately producing the final recording in early 2020. |

It took me several years to finish this piece. I had it pretty much nailed down early on, but a variety of other priorities kept me from writing and recording it. In the end it post-dated my previous composition, Epic, by nearly four years! Sigh. It's a good piece though. |

Definitely one of my favorites. I never really thought the name of this piece fit properly. It was chosen by someone else when I couldn't think of a name. In hindsight, I am unsatisfied with the name, but now I associate the name with it and it would feel odd to rename it. Ah me. |

The pieces listed in the next section never made their way onto an album (although in all fairness, the Tribal Beats album was never formally produced either, it is merely a temporal grouping — I wrote all of them in a very brief period of time). One of the pieces listed below is, in fact, quite old, dating to after the second album but before the oldest piece on the third album. For some reason, I didn't include it in the third album; I have no idea why at this point. The other two pieces are, on the contrary, quite recent. Both post-date the fourth album by several years. Their lack of inclusion in a collection is easy to understand: after the fourth album I never generated a large enough collection of nonpiano music to group into a fifth album. Consequently, my fifth album was Solo Piano, listed above.

Jazz, for lack of a more appropriate label. Although initially repetitive, give it a chance. I like the transition at about minute 2:19. It is also interesting to note the stark similarity between this piece and Remembrance Waiting, especially in their identical opening theme. This is no accident: one was born from the other (Remembrance Waiting came first I believe). |

A booty-shakin' reggae beat. Can't listen to it without moving. The primary instruments are sax and flute with strong percussion undertones. The offbeat is an electronic keyboard. |
My fourth album, Mental Notes, is quite similar in style to the third album. I did not realize it at the time, but the fourth album would be my last extensive exploration of electronic music. With the exception of a few scattered pieces over the subsequent years, none of which would eventually gather into a collection (an album), I then moved on to piano music and have so far never looked back. The realization makes me a little sad. I love my electronic music, but I have found my music leanings to be strongly piano-centric for a long time now.

I love this piece. Pseudo humpback whale sounds set against what feels like an acoustic impressionistic representation of deep water. I don't know how else to describe it. Synesthesia: navy blue, although that may be influenced by the overt whale overtures. |

This is a pretty good piece. While I don't generally think of it when listing my favorites, I nevertheless find myself listening to it a lot. |
With the culmination of my third album, Total Eclipse, I had developed a confident mastery of my synthesizer and a solid understanding of the fashion in which it would shape my music. My overall style, although quite varied from piece to piece, had finally developed a consistency which would last through both this album and the fourth album.

I composed the introduction for this piece in an effectively random way by slowly tapping keys in an arbitrary order but with a steady trend up the keyboard. When I sped it up to full speed, many interesting patterns emerged that I had been unaware of while slowly tapping keys one at a time. |

Possibly my absolute favorite piece. Light-hearted, flitting, doesn't take itself too seriously. Synesthesia: sky-blue, thus the name. |
During my foray into electronic music I produced a few pieces which were very different from the rest of my music, which I have dubbed the tribal beats (along with two extraneous but related pieces, Metamorphosis and Repetition). These six pieces (and especially the four offical tribal beats pieces) are characterized by extreme repetition where the growth and progression of the piece comes not from varation in the tune but from the way in which the various layers combine. Once I understood how this form worked — once I had the rules clear in my head — I adhered to the structure to produce four pieces which, as a group, I call the Tribal Beats. While all of the pieces in these two collections are highly repetitive, the four official tribal beats represent the strictest form...and are also distinct in the use of very strong stereo effects. All of these pieces, especially the four tribal beats, are best appreciated when heard with either headphones or well-positioned speakers to fully reproduce the stereo qualities they contain. I prefer to listen to them in a pitch black environment.

This piece actually post-dates the tribal beats and lacks their strong stereo effects. In addition, the adherence to a strict structure of unwaivering themes is diminished by the presence of an ongoing theme which does not perfectly repeat but rather grows and explores like "normal" music. |

The origin of the tribal beat style, the first piece composed in this fashion. By comparing it to the four tribal beats, one can easily tell that the form was not yet fully developed |
My second album, 110%, was the first in which I really started to explore the possibilities of my new synthesizer. The music is, perhaps, less complex than my later work, and the use of the synthesizer is often less refined, but the collection nevertheless includes some nice gems.

This piece was the first to make me realize I had some degree of musical synesthesia. This piece was obviously red, as per the resulting name. In fact, it feels exactly like the name, many different values ranging from pure red to much darker reds. |
I never really wanted to name my pieces, and on my first album I pretty much refused to participate, so I just enumerated them as intimations in the spirit of the album's name. That is, the caterpillar's advice comes in the form of a series of hints or suggestions, each one being a track on the album (the intimation number reflects the track order on the album, not their chronological order of composition). For all subsequent compositions I have attempted to come up with a name, although in many cases it has been difficult and I have ended up not liking the eventual name. Oh well.
Many of the songs on Advice from a Caterpillar were composed before I purchased my synthesizer and consequently were composed entirely on (and originally intended for) a piano. I merely recorded some of them with synthesized instruments because I thought they fit well once I got my synthesizer. The exceptions are the last three pieces (Intimations 8, 9, and 10), which were composed after I got my my synthesizer.
